What is the Science Expo?
The Science Expo is an annual event where we encourage our Chameleons of all grade levels (kindergarten-fifth grade) to practice scientific thinking and problem-solving and improvise when a procedure doesn’t work out as predicted.
Students submit a project idea in the registration process outlined below, conduct the experiment, and create a display to share their findings. This gives students a chance to apply the science skills they are learning in school while further investigating an area of interest to them.

Who Can Participate?
Any student from kindergarten through fifth grade at Carpenter can register.

What are the Guidelines for a Project?
While there is a great deal of flexibility in the projects, there are some guidelines we ask the projects to follow:
  • The project should reflect the work of the student. Parents are encouraged to assist their children in finding resources and supervising all experimentation and work as appropriate for the child’s age
  • The project should utilize the scientific method to explore their question. Not sure what the scientific method entails? This three minute musical version goes over it and applies the steps to a simple experiment:

  • The project must be displayed using a standard, three panel display board that is roughly 36” by 48” when unfolded. You can find these at most grocery stores, drug stores, or office supply stores. For more information on what typical displays include, visit this site: http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair=-projects/project_display_board.shtml#keyinfo

What is the Expo Schedule?
The Expo will be held on February 19th, 2020 from 6-7pm in the cafeteria/gym at Carpenter Elementary School. The schedule for the event is below.
  • Registration and Set-Up: 5:30-6:00pm
Participants should enter through the main door of the school and register at the tables in the hall outside the entrance to the cafeteria. Each student will be assigned a space on one of the tables in the cafeteria for their display.
  • Science Expo: 6:00-7:00pm
Students need to be present to talk about their project during the expo. Parents, family members, teachers, administrators, and other students will walk around to view the displays.

How Does my Child Register?
A student can register in one of two ways (see below); the deadline to register is Friday, February 14, 2020.
  1. Complete the online registration form: CLICK HERE
  2. Fill out the form in the flyer sent home with your student and return the form to the student’s teacher

Are there Resources Available to Help my Child Explore Possible Topics for the Expo?
  • There are a number of books with possible science project topics available from Wake County Libraries. Search
“Science Project Ideas” in their online catalog for examples.
  • There are a number of websites with project ideas by grade level, but here are a few to help get you started:
